Gems of the West
Visiting Nevada, Utah, Arizona and California

8 Days From $688

Your Itinerary

Day 1 – Sun – Las Vegas Arrival
On arrival into Las Vegas make your own way to your hotel. Your Tour Director will be available at the hotel in the late afternoon to assist with information. Then, the evening is free to explore this incredible city! Las Vegas has grown from a railway siding to a place like no other on earth. It is a spectacle of impressive hotels and casinos with amazing architecture and light displays. Why not try your hand with Lady Luck, stroll along 'the Strip', or just absorb the atmosphere of the city.

Day 2 – Mon – Las Vegas at Leisure

Today, take a break and relax or indulge! Lounge by the pool, maybe do some shopping, or take a free lesson in roulette or baccarat. You certainly won't come away hungry if you try out one of Las Vegas' legendary 'all you can eat' buffets. There are also some terrific optional tours available today which your Tour Director can arrange for you. Perhaps take a thrilling helicopter ride from the 'Strip' into the Grand Canyon, or maybe enjoy a cabaret and cocktail show at one of the famous dazzling showrooms tonight?

Day 3 – Tue – Las Vegas – Bryce Canyon

We leave Las Vegas and follow the Virgin River upstream into the state of Utah and on to Zion National Park. A symphony of red sandstone with soaring cliffs and pinnacles, Zion is one of the great scenic wonders of the West. We climb further up the Colorado Plateau (we gain 2000 metres today) to Bryce Canyon. Dainty finger-like spires, called hoodoos, reflect the afternoon light in an impressive display of nature's majesty. Tonight why not enjoy the hospitality of the 'Old West' at an optional 'cowboy cookout and hoedown' (seasonal).

Day 4 – Wed – Bryce Canyon – Grand Canyon

This morning we pass vivid stretches of the spectacular escarpment known as the Vermilion Cliffs. We cross the Colorado River at Lake Powell and into Arizona where we stop for a visit to Glen Canyon Dam and Bridge. Then we drive through land sacred to the sacred Navajo Nation, the largest Native American Reservation in the country. This afternoon is devoted to the Grand Canyon. We tour the South Rim, making several stops for photographs of the rugged canyon walls, carved by the forces of the Colorado River. While at the Grand Canyon, why not take an optional helicopter flight for superb views of this majestic landscape?

Day 5 – Thu – Grand Canyon – Phoenix

We descend the Kaibab Plateau via scenic Oak Creek Canyon and then continue to the artists' village of Sedona. The town is charming and the setting, amidst towering red cliffs, is sensational. We also visit the mysterious cliff dwellings of Montezuma Castle. Then it's on to Phoenix, capital of Arizona. Why not take advantage of our hotel's location and visit the state's largest mall?

Day 6 – Fri – Phoenix – San Diego

The state flower of Arizona is the Giant Saguaro Cactus, and we see plenty of the curious giant plants around Phoenix. We head west across the Colorado River one more time, and cross back into California. This afternoon we reach the Golden State's oldest city, San Diego. On arrival we begin our orientation tour to see some of the landmarks, including famous Balboa Park. The remainder of the day is at leisure, perhaps take an optional cruise on San Diego's stunning harbour, home of the US Navy's Pacific Fleet? Tonight maybe you'd like to explore the restaurant scene in San Diego?

Day 7 – Sat – San Diego at Leisure

The day is at leisure to relax, enjoy a few hours by the pool, or perhaps take an optional excursion. Why not cross the border to nearby Tijuana to bargain for souvenirs, colourful blankets, silver jewellery, leather goods or other handicrafts? Or perhaps take in the amazing show with Shamu, the killer whale, at SeaWorld, as well as the sea otters, dolphins, and much more. Even thrill-seekers will find something to do on SeaWorld's adventure rides!

Day 8 – Sun – San Diego – Los Angeles Departure

A leisurely start today, before we depart for Los Angeles. Scenic glimpses of coastal towns and mountains accompany us for part of the drive. We arrive at Los Angeles International Airport by approximately 2:00 p.m. (Flights should not be scheduled before 4:30 pm). A stop will also be made in Anaheim for passengers wishing to extend their stay.

Note: If you have more vacation time, this tour is part of our 15 day 'Best of the West'.
