Day 1 London Paris
We meet
our Tour Director this morning at the Hilton Olympia, and
depart for our ferry to Calais. Then across the World War I
battlefields of the Somme to Paris, the 'City of Light'.
Tonight, perhaps a tour of the illuminations?
Day 2
Paris Sightseeing
This
morning our local guide shows us the the splendid Eiffel Tower
and Arc de Triomphe. Then we drive along the Champs Elysees to
visit Notre Dame Cathedral. Later, there is time to explore or
perhaps relax at a sidewalk cafe? (B)
Day 3
Paris Lyon
After an
early breakfast we follow the autoroute through France's great
agricultural lands. We cross the Forests of Fontainebleau, one
time private hunting ground of the Kings of France, and pass
the renowned Chablis region. In Burgundy, we visit the
epicentre of this great wine region, the medieval village of
Beaune. Later we continue south to Lyon, a city built at the
meeting of two of France's great rivers, the Rhone and the
Saone. We enjoy an orientation tour of the city before
reaching our hotel. (B,D)
Day 4
Lyon Nice
This
morning we travel past Montelimar to arrive in the city of
Avignon, where we admire the Gothic Papal Palace and the St.
Benezet Bridge. Then through Provenηal countryside, which
inspired Van Gogh and Cezanne to the French Riviera and the
elegant resort of Nice, Queen of the Riviera! (B)
Day 5
Nice at Leisure
Today we
will enjoy a full day at leisure on the Riviera. Perhaps swim
in the Mediterranean, stroll the Promenade des Anglais or shop
in the elegant boutiques. Why not visit the hill town of St
Paul de Vence or visit Monaco to have a flutter in a Monte
Carlo casino? (B)
Day 6
Nice Veneto
We cross
into Italy, travelling along the 'Highway of the Flowers',
through tunnels and over bridges. We pass the marble port of
Genoa, where Christopher Columbus was born, before heading
inland towards Piacenza. We cross the rich farmlands of the Po
valley to reach our hotel in the Veneto region. (B)
Day 7
Venice Sightseeing
We drive
to the Venetian Lagoon where our private launch takes us to
St. Mark's Square. We disembark to see the Bridge of Sighs,
connecting the Doges' Palace with the Prisons. Then we stroll
across the square, past St. Mark's Basilica, to watch a
demonstration of Venetian glass-blowing. The remainder of the
day is at leisure. Perhaps take a lagoon cruise for a
delicious seafood lunch or explore the quiet canals and
corners of this unique city? (B,D)
Day 8
Veneto Innsbruck
Leaving
the Veneto this morning, our first stop will be in Verona to
see the first century Roman arena and Juliet's balcony - can
you recite Shakespeare's immortal words? Then we begin our
climb into the Alps, over the Brenner Pass into Austria. From
here we cross the Europa Bridge and begin our descent into
Innsbruck. On arrival we see Maximilian's Golden Roof, the
Imperial Palace and the ornate, Rococo Wilten Basilica. This
evening perhaps enjoy a Tyrolean folklore show? (B,D)
Day 9
Innsbruck Lucerne
This
morning we travel through Alpine scenery in the Arlberg region
en route to the Principality of Liechtenstein and its capital
of Vaduz. Now we continue past Lake Walensee to beautiful
lakeside Lucerne. (B)
Day 10
Lucerne Sightseeing
This
morning our Tour Director shows us the emotive Lion Monument.
Then free time to perhaps stroll across the covered Chapel
Bridge, explore some of Switzerland's best shops or maybe join
an exciting excursion by cable car up a mountain for views of
spectacular peaks? (B,D)
Day 11
Lucerne Rhineland
Today we
pass through Zurich to Schaffhausen to see the Rhine River
thundering over the Rhine Falls with an awe-inspiring roar,
before driving into Germany and deep into the Black Forest,
where cuckoo clocks are made by hand. We then follow the Rhine
Valley north past the spa resort of Baden Baden to Heidelberg
where we see the magnificent Heidelberg Castle built in red
sandstone, overlooking the Student Prince's town. Then we
continue onto our hotel in the Rhineland. (B,D)
Day 12
Rhineland Amsterdam
We pass
the Pfalz Castle and legendary Loreley Rock, before joining
our highlight Rhine Cruise to follow the most romantic stretch
of the river. Castles stand guard over ripening grapes and
sleepy villages as they have done since the days of
Charlemagne. We continue on via Bonn to Cologne where we view
the 13th century Cathedral with its soaring spires. Now
through the famous Ruhr valley and into Holland and our
Amsterdam hotel. (B)
Day 13
Amsterdam Sightseeing
We start
the day with an orientation tour of this colourful city seeing
Dam Square and the Mint Tower. Maybe stop for an 'advocaat' in
one of the typical brown cafes before we visit a
diamond-cutting and polishing factory. Then we travel into the
Dutch countryside to see how clogs and cheese are made. Later,
maybe join your fellow travellers for an optional farewell
dinner? (B)
Day 14
Amsterdam London
This
morning we leave this lively city and make our way to Belgium
and across Flanders Fields en route to Calais. We board our
modern ferry and soon the famous White Cliffs announce our
arrival in Dover. We transfer to London where our tour comes
to an end. (B)
