The Himalayas! Stretched across the thick neck of the Indian sub-continent for about 2800km., the Himalayas straddles several countries, from Afghanistan in the West to Assam in India in the Southeast. Varying from 160 to 250 kms in width, this awesome mountain range divides India from Tibet.
The Himalaya is distinguished by an enormous variety of climate, vegetation and wild life. And, of course, the giant snow clad mountains. Within the Indian Himalayas are the boundaries of Asia’s three main cultures. The lands of Kashmir mark the eastern-most boundary of the Islamic culture, Ladakh is predominantly Buddhist, while the foothills of Himachal and Uttar Pradesh contain some of the central sites of Hindu heritage.
These mountains have a special place in the minds of our people. Throughout the Himalaya, a complex network of trails and passes has evolved, criss-crossing the ranges and linking the principle valleys. The Himalaya is the ideal tramping ground for lover of the outdoors! |
