The origin of Mathura is ancient. It is said to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the popular incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Mathura and the area around it, including Vrindavan, are linked with the childhood exploits of Lord Krishna. Krishna spent his early childhood here and revealed the first signs of his divinity.
Virtually every site in Mathura is associated with legends related to Krishna. Gokul near Mathura, is where Krishna was raised; Mahaban is said to be the seat of the palace of Nanda, Krishna's foster father. Barsana is said to be the original home of Radha. Most temples in the town of Brindavan are associated with several of the leelas of Krishna.
