Day 03
We flank the cold Atlantic Ocean en route
to Hout Bay. Once a fishing community, now one of the most
popular residential areas, the harbour still has a charm of
days gone by. Enjoy a half-hour cruise to "Seal Island" or for
the not so adventurous, the fish market "Mariners Wharf" is a
must. We make our way south, following the Atlantic Ocean and
then stop for a lobster and prawn lunch at a local restaurant.
Our choice for the day is the Black Marlin restaurant (not
included in the rate – own account), known for its seafood. We
now continue alongside the Indian Ocean, and stop to see the
Jackass penguin colony, which has become well established, at
Boulders beach near Simonstown. Then we travel onwards until
we reach Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. Said to be the
romantic meeting place of the two mighty oceans, the Atlantic
and the Indian, Sir Francis Drake the Explorer once called it
"the fairest Cape that we saw in the whole circumference of
the Globe". And rightly so, it must be the highlight of any
visit to the Mother City, if not South Africa. Our last stop
of the day is at the Kirstenbosch Botanical gardens, home of
some 3 500 species of Southern African fauna and flora.

We wave good bye
to Cape Town and start our tour of the Garden Route… A taste
of Eden. A corner of Africa so magical in its diversity that
it’s known as Nature’s Garden. Unlock the secrets of Golden
Beaches, inland lakes and brooding forests, then meander
over the imposing Outeniqua Mountains into the ‘big sky’
vistas of the Klein Karoo and the magnificent Swartberg
Mountains. Experience the infectious friendly nature of our
people.
-
The Portuguese
explorer Bartholomeus Diaz was the first European to land at
Mossel Bay in 1488. However, he was not received well by the
Hottentots who lived there and he had to sail on without
having been able to replenish his provisions, as he would
have hoped for. A few years later, in 1497, Vasco da Gama
found much better conditions. Following his successful
landing, the place became an important port of call for many
Portuguese ships to fill up their fresh water and stock up
their provisions. The sailors even developed a working
communication system: There was a boot hanging in an old
milkwood tree, in which the sailors deposited messages for
other ships. A stone shoe above the beach of Mossel Bay
still reminds of this "Post-Office-Tree". In the Diaz Museum
one can see the replica of a sailing ship which Diaz used on
his journey in 1488. The caravelle was built in Portugal and
sailed in 1988, at the 500th birthday of the seafarer, to
Mossel Bay.
