The town of
Tirupati is one of the most ancient and sacred pilgrimage spots in
India. The name ‘Tirupati’ means the “Lord of Lakshmi,” and should
have been applied to the village on the Venkat hill, the dwelling
of Lord Venkateswara. However, Tirupati is the town and transport
hub at the bottom of the hill. The hill near the temple is called
‘Tirumala’ or the “sacred hill.” The temple here is said to be the
busiest in the world, eclipsing even Rome, Jerusalem and Mecca
with the number of pilgrims visiting it. |

SAME DAY TIRUPATI
Your journey will commence early morning from a pre-designated
place from where your coach journey will begin for Tirupati. Upon
arrival you will have some time to prepare for the darshans and
Abhisheks that you wish to perform. The main pilgrimage centers
here are Sri Venkateswara temple on the Tirumala Hill and the
Govindaraja temple of Tirupati. (The other temples that can be
visited, time permitting are the shrine of Padmavati at Tiruchanur,
five miles to the south of Tirupati, Kapileswara temple at
Kapilatirtham, the Rama temple in Tirupati and the Parasareswara
temple at Jogi - Mallavaram near Tiruchanur).
The temple at Tirumala is believed to have existed from ancient
times. The Vimana or Cupola over the sanctum sanctorum is gold
plated and is known as ‘The Ananda Nilayam’. The idol of the
deity, the full figure of Lord Venkateswara has the attributes of
both Vishnu and Shiva, preserving and destroying aspects of the
Hindu Trinity. The elaborate rituals and mode of worship in temple
were prescribed by the saint Ramanujacharya and are being followed
even today. Anointing the idol with camphor, and the offering of
hair by pilgrims are the most important customs in vogue at this
temple.
At the conclusion of the darshan, you will return back to Chennai
and arrive at the point of embarkation.
