It
is Buddhist Country, and seldom-visited Valley by outsiders.
Architecturally the village houses are built of stone and
plastered with mud, flat rooftops. They are very attractive and
the surroundings too are a delight to the eye. |

By
Coach/Jeep over Rohtang Pass (13,400 ft) There are superb views
all around. Across the Pass you are away from the monsoon. Down
the Lahaul Valley to the banks of Chandra River. Early in the
evening you reach Udeypur. It takes about 7 hours by Coach to
Udeypur. Overnight in Camp/Rest House (8,500 ft). |

Udeypur - Chimrat (9,500 ft) A hot morning walk through a gorge
where you can hear boulders being pushed around by the swift
currents of the Miyar river. In this dry and rocky area many
unusual plants grow Coridalis ramose, Ephedra geradiana etc. Camp
at Chimrat (9,500 ft) outside the village, in a forest. |

Chimrat - Open buff On up the Valley and then down to the river
again, by early afternoon you are at camp on an open buff above
the river in a Juniper forest. Opportunity to explore flowers or
catch up on your diaries, sitting on boulders by the river side. |

Trek
to Urgos Walk to Urgos village where, is a Gompa with Lamas and
the murals, which have been recently repainted showing scenes from
the Buddha's life. Cross the river, move on to the Challing and
camp on the fringe of a forest, which is a charming campsite
(9,500-ft). A number of plants such as Primulae Macrophylla, and
others can be found. |

Rest
day with plenty of areas to explore for more Alpine flowers and
herbs that grow here. |
|
|
|
|
|
 
Up the
valley, across a stony moraine sect and some side streams to
Khanjarar, the last village. Camp above the village on a beautiful
alpine meadow, with a carpet of Edelweiss and Catmint. You are
here for three days which are spent walking to wide open meadows
where Yaks graze, and explore side valleys for the ever increasing
alpine flowers that grow here, It is not rare to see the Himalayan
Griffons and Lammergeyers. |

Back
the same way using different campsites, an opportunity to explore
newer sides of valleys and ridges. |
|
|
|
|
|
 
On the
12th day, reach Udeypur in the afternoon and visit a 16th century
Hindu temple. It has some of the finest woodcarvings in the
Western Himalayas, depicting scenes of legends from the
Mahabharata and Ramayana. Overnight in the rest house or Camp. |
