Sikkim, and the adjoining mountains of
Darjeeling and Kalimpong, together forms a homogenous mountain
mass astride the valleys of the Teesta and Rangit Rivers. Wedged
between the Himalayan Kingdoms of Nepal, Bhutan, and the Tibetan
uplands, this region has the most magnificent range of snow clad
mountains in the world, comprising of two enormous spurs of the
Great Himalayas; the Singalila and Chola Ranges. The Himalayan
barriers of this arc enclose three sides of a gigantic
amphitheater; hewn as it were out of the Himalayas, and sloping
down on its Southern side towards the plains of North Bengal.
The Singelila Range runs along the Indo-Nepal
border dominated by the majestic 5-summited 8586 Meters high,
Mount Khangchendzonga -the third highest in the world. Extending
South lies the Sandakphu-Phalut Ridge. This is nature's
grandstand. Covered with forests and flora, at an altitude of 3600
Meters, it offers breathtaking views not only of the
Khangchendzonga but also of the Mt. Everest 8848 M, Makalu, 8475
M, and Lhoste, 8501 M. At the tri- junction of India, Nepal and
Sikkim stands Phalut -the denuded peak.
The Samthar- Singelila trek is exclusively
operated by Gurudongma Tours and Treks, for nature and mountain
lovers, offers exciting itinerary of nature trails. There are
breathtaking views, insights and contacts with local population in
remote regions, and wonderful opportunities for photography.
Included in the tour is a short but exciting rafting session,
followed by a 4-day trek to the remote Samthar Plateau. This
enables a natural and cultural experience, as also provides an
opportunity for trekkers to build up mountain muscles, stamina,
and acclimatize gradually. This preliminary trek adds to the
pleasures of the 06-day high altitude Singelila trek.
