Istanbul, formerly Constantinople, is a treasure trove of fine monuments,
intriguing streets and glittering bazaars. The final fragment of the roman
empire crumbled and through Europe’s Dark Ages this city carried European
civilization on from its Greek and Roman origins. Turkey is famous for its
good and cheap shopping. Clothes, jewellery handicrafts, leather apparel
carpets coloured tiles and crockery, carved meerschaum, brass and copperware
are all good buys. Bargaining usually pays off. |
